I am entering college next year and I have a mild stutter… suggestions to help cure/aid problem?

I will be a freshman in college next year and I have had a mild stutter for as long as I can remember. Through self-therapy and defense mechanisms, I have been able to reduce the stutter, but it still exists at times. Its very frustrating because in the eyes of the stranger I seem like an unintelligent and “off” person.

I love being around people and in fact I have aspirations of possibly pursuing a career in law, where much speaking will be done. Ironically, I love public speaking.

For me, speaking does not come natural and I have to put in extra concentration to formulate smooth flowing sentences and dialogue. Of course, like all stutters, I have good and bad days. Anyway, my question is… can anyone give me advice on what methods/techniques I could use? Should I see a speech therapist / will that help? Is it too late to completely cure my disability?

Thanks in advance, this is my first post on this site.

One of my favorite singers was Mel Tillis,(before your time) he had a stutter but singing was fantastic. He talked on this problem on stage on time. Im sure by now many new solutions have came available,, Research it as much you can, ask your insurance provider if it covers treatment. As for starting in college every one else has doubts too, some about their weight, a bad face complextion, mixed heritage, whatever. If someone is putting you down for such a thing their opinion is not needed. Im very over weight, when I learned to accept it and not let snide remarks get to me I was able to get it in control it much more. Maybe its the same for stuttering with some help also. Good luck, let me know how it goes. *mamatx

A speech therapist is a definite solution. Your college will likely have a communication disorder or speech pathology lab on campus that offers free counseling and services to students. Check around your school’s website and contact someone in communication disorder department for more information.
