i want to get rid of my stutter…?
I have a stutter, i always have, its not bad. it was barely noticeable last year, but its gotten worse recently. ive gone to speach therapy for forever, but all they tell me is to drag things out like im retarded.
i hate it!!!!! it is sooo annoying. i constantly switch words to synonyms, and pretend to forget what i was saying just to avoid stutturing. When i get stuck, it sometimes takes like 30-45 seconds to get the word out.
today, i was presenting in class and i got stuck on a word and i was like c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-c-cccccc-cc-c-c-c-constantly, and then a kid in the class just burst out laughing. that was kind of the last straw for me. I WANT IT GONE. i want to be able to talk like a regular person.
if there are any ways to get rid of it, or clinics i can go to, PLEASE tell me. I need to stop. It causes so much insecurity. i’m quieter then i would be, because sometimes i cant get words out, so i never tell long storys b/c i know i’ll start stuttering and noone will understand me. i act like its no big deal, but it really bothers me.
PLEASE HELP ME!

stutter therapy
I dont know how to get rid of it, but i just wanna tell you that i think stutters are cute! :)
You shouldnt have to change yourself for some twat that laughs at you x
Gosh, you sound so damn cute. (I like stutters)
I’m sorry it bothers you so much… I hope you figure something out.
Try to talk slower and make sure you know what you are going to say before you say it outloud. Enunciate and such. That is the most you can do I guess, that and go to therapy.
Try covering your ears and read from a book into a tape recorder, see if this reduces the stutter, it could be your mind is too fast and is trying to correct your speech. I know one of my frinds had a simmilar problem and this seemed to help him. If you make a short recording you may find that the text you have read is without stutter…. other than that just try a english laugauge tape, and repeat the phrases each evening.
Really good question; stuttering is VERY natural and most people, overtime, will lose their stutter. I know you hate it, but what you were doing the other day, the presentation, is exactly what you need to stop it. It’s good that you’re going to speech therapy, but to truly get over your stutter? No magic pill, no book to read; just speak.
Speak, speak, speak.
Talk to people; and I’m not referring to people that you know - go out somewhere and try to strike up a small, very short conversation with someone you don’t know. Like, go out for ice cream and as you pay, talk to the cashier for just a few seconds.
Many times, stuttering occurs due to nervousness - you get mixed up and the words don’t seem to want to come out. I know - I use to stutter.
Then I decided I got tired of it, so I took Drama (acting) class and then took Speech class in college all we did for 6 months was give speeches.
I don’t stutter anymore.
On SUPER rare occasions, I’ll break into a stutter, but it’ll last for only 2 seconds, then i catch myself and I stop.
Try it - I bet it works!
I think you are asking for help in the wrong place….if you have been going to speech therapy “forever” than something isn’t working. Look into another facility local to you..try Google.com. There are, I am sure, different methods to help conquer your stutter, you just need to find it. I give you lots of credit on trying to overcome this and for asking. Good luck!
I know you might not want to hear this, but there is really no way to get rid of a stutter. Though taking speech therapy might help prevent it from getting worse, you can’t rid yourself of it. :/ BUT!! You can stay confident. Just inform the people you are around that you have a stuttering issue. They should understand unless they are jerks and fail at life. *>:{* There is a place in New York that helps with the confidence of those who stutter, so you’ll feel more secure about it. It’s okay to stutter, it just makes you, you. *Sorry if this doesn’t help at all. :P*
i saw a 60 minutes show or something like that a while back. they actually have this ear piece, kind of like a hearing aid. it goes in your ear and a split second or less after you say something it’s echoed back to your piece and prevents stuttering. it’s pretty neat. it’s probably expensive though.
i don’t know what else to offer except change speech therapists. there are some who use different methods.
good luck!
Hi there,
I have a stutter as well and I can totally relate to the way you feel!!!!! It is SO annoying when you can’t say what your want to say, when you want to say it!!!
Like you, I tried speech therapy but found it didn’t really work and the slowed speech thing was really annoying!!!
Almost 4 years ago, I had a “that’s the last straw!” moment when I stuttered while speaking to my new boss in the lift. It was so embarrassing!! I looked into what else I could do about it and came across The McGuire Programme. It is a 5 day intensive residential course (you stay at a hotel) where you basically re-learn how to speak and gain control of your speech and your stutter. The key element of it is a breathing technique so that there is a constant air flow over the vocal chords which prevents you from blocking or stuttering (think of our vocal chords like a wood wind instrument - they need air flow to make a sound.. when we block on a word and try to force it out, the vocal chords just get tighter and no air is passing over them).
Another key element of the programme is confronting your fears about speaking and actually doing them! This includes public speaking (in a town centre!!), speaking to strangers (100 of them!!) and speaking on the phone… to name a few. The whole experience was very empowering! The Best thing though is that the course is run completely by recoverring and recoverred stutterers, not by speech therapists. So you know the people teaching you actually know what you’re going through. Past graduates from the programme come back throughout the 5 days and help coach the new students. It’s really good and has a great atmosphere!!
I also enjoyed meeting so many other stutterers and realising I wasn’t alone.
At the end of the 5 days the new students each do a final day speech. It is AMAZING the change that occurs in just 5 days. For me it was a really life changing experience. I confronted this stutter that I had let grow into a monster that caused me so much anxiety and frustration. The whole experience though has made me a much stronger person. (I remember thinking, if I can control my stutter, I can do anything!!)
4 years on, I’m much more in control of my speech. Sometimes I still have bad days, but at least I have techniques that I know work AND a huge international network of people to assist me if needed. Psychologically, I don’t get so worked up about my stutter any more either… it is a part of me…. so what… but now I’m in control of it, not the other way around.
The website is: http://www.mcguireprogramme.com/
There are courses all over the world. I did my course in the UK but I’m from Australia and can continue on back in Oz. I’ve also trained to be a coach. It’s really good. Check it out. It may just change your life!!
Good luck, and don’t worry… you are not alone… 67 billion people worldwide stutter!! (Isn’t it crazy how no one actually knows the cause?!)

“Self Therapy for the Stutterer” published by The Stuttering Foundation of America worked wonders for my family members who stuttered after working through it step by step. The book can be found here http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Portals/English/Book_0012_tenth_ed.pdf
Some medications that other stutterers have tried include lorazepam, citalopram, celexa, and buspar. Ask your doctor about trying an anti-anxiety medication while you are working on your stuttering. Be aware that your stuttering may be better than the side-effects of the medication, though.
Each stutterer is different, and a therapist who specializes in treating stuttering will be able to determine what will help you the most as they work with you.
The Foundation also has a list of speech therapists who have been trained to work with stutterers
My uncles who stuttered said that they stuttered worse when they tried NOT to stutter, when they were under stress, and when they were very tired. Try concentrating on what you are saying rather than how you are talking, eliminating as much stress from your life as you can, getting plenty of rest, plus working on your speech using a therapist, the self therapy book, or watching The Stuttering Foundation’s videos and using the things you learn every day.

It’s a great program for getting rid of a speech stutter.
Good luck!
