Light stutter in the army?

I plan to join the army but all my life I had a small stutter to my speech. LIke when I talk to my friends I never do but doing things like talking to strangers or performing in front of a class or anyone brings out some stutter. For bct I know you have to yell everything you say and I don’t stutter when I yell or sing, but I am worried that I’ll get nervous and screw up my speech if I’m forced to recited something. Any suggestions? I took speech therapy for a long time but it doesn’t help so that is out of the question.

I think everyone is like that. We all stutter when we are nervous. Just try not to think of it. Y’all are there for the same reason. To become a Soldier. No one will laugh if you do.

As long as it does not significantly impair your ability to communicate, you will be okay. Read AR 40-501, Standards of Medical Fitness which I have outlined and linked below.

i. Any current receptive or expressive language disorder, including, but not limited to any speech impediment, stammering and stuttering (307.0) of such a degree as to significantly interfere with production of speech or to repeat commands, is disqualifying.

Don’t worry about it man you will do just fine, I have a light stutter myself and I made it through the ranks pretty quick E-1 to E-5 in 2 years, 19K best damn MOS in the Army. Good luck with bct.
