My stuttering is affecting me making new friends and my social life?

I am sixteen years old and in the 10th grade.I can’t talk to anyone most of time without stuttering! It’s taking over my life and I’m worried about my future! What can I do to have a normal life and meet new people? I have been to speech therapy but my parents can’t afford it. I run cross country and does it affect my stuttering in any way? Thanks.

There is one really simple trick that speech therapists have been using for years and years. Sterilize some marbles by boiling them { enough that will fill up your mouth but won’t make you choke on them } and when their done cool them and put them in and talk until you are able to speak clearly. It will take some time but alot of people have been able to stop their stuttering and speak clearly like everyone else.

Hey don’t worry about anything. I have a boyfriend who stutters but only when he is surrounded by new people. You can’t do nothing but take your time and speak your mind. I heard that people how stutters are much smarter that most people because they already know what they wanna say it’s just your tongue won’t let it come out right…. So don’t worry about anything just try to surround yourself around positive people.. I wish you the best

Don’t let people know it affects you. Just keep on going with your life. Make jokes about it … I know that’s very cliche … but it works.

I’m dyslexic…. and have been known to say some of dumbest things in public … like … I’ll be giving a speech and completely mix around wording … like instead of saying Mud Puddle, I’ll say Pud Muddle …. (I’ve done worse, but that’s what’s popping into my head) … I’m a history major … and I’ve been known to make things that happened in say … 1691 happen in 1961 ….

You’ll be fine. If you can make people believe it doesn’t bother you … then they won’t care, and eventually, you won’t care either.

Cross country running does not cause stuttering, but anytime you are overly tired, you may find that you stutter more. Being under stress or any extreme emotion can also cause you to stutter more. Try to keep your life as stress free as possible, get plenty of rest, and try these resources:
http://www.stutteringhelp.org there are videos online that show speech therapists working with stutterers; watch them and learn some techniques.

“Self Therapy for the Stutterer” published by The Stuttering Foundation of America worked wonders for my family members who stuttered after working through it step by step. The book can be found here http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Portals/English/Book_0012_tenth_ed.pdf

Some medications that other stutterers have tried include lorazepam, citalopram, celexa, and buspar. Ask your doctor about trying an anti-anxiety medication while you are working on your stuttering. Be aware that your stuttering may be better than the side-effects of the medication, though.

Each stutterer is different, and a therapist who specializes in treating stuttering will be able to determine what will help you the most as they work with you.

The Foundation also has a list of speech therapists who have been trained to work with stutterers

My uncles who stuttered said that they stuttered worse when they tried NOT to stutter, when they were under stress, and when they were very tired. Try concentrating on what you are saying rather than how you are talking, eliminating as much stress from your life as you can, getting plenty of rest, plus working on your speech using a therapist, the self therapy book, or watching The Stuttering Foundation’s videos and using the things you learn every day.
